A GLOVE

  • Protests in Khartoum had been ongoing since 2019. With years of protesting under their belt the protestors had become professionals. By this time they have become great risks evaluators and they have created tactics to keep themselves safe. Not all of them an not all the time.

By end of August over 100 protestors are dead and this is not taking into account the 118 killed and over 70 people raped in the Khartoum massacre of 2019 that kicked of the wave of protest.

One way the protesters have learned to protect themselves against harm is to deny their participation to the protest after they are broken violently. In this way they cannot be picked one by one from the streets when the group has scattered.

So on August 11 2022 a protestor wearing a bandana as a face covering picks up a teargas canister and hurls it back towards the police. A while later he retreats, takes of the bandana and drops the glove he was wearing on the ground. So now if  he is stopped on the street he can deny participating in the protest. Previously the police had used the burn marks left by the tear gas canisters to identify people who participated in the protests and would jail them, beat them or kill them. Now the burnless hands protect the protesters.
