On November 19, 2022, it had been two months since Mahsa Amini was killed by the Iranian authorities. Mahabad, which lies in western Iran, Ardestan County, Isfahan province, West Azerbaijan and Kurdistan, is a place that seems to have a different designation depending on who you ask.
I am watching video footage on YouTube and photos on Iran International of Mahabad and trying to stitch together the day's events. There are large crowds gathered on a hill. At first, I was baffled by how many people there could be, but then I checked the census, and it seems that 168,393 people live in the city. That is a pretty big city where I come from in Finland. Even if the magic of 3,5 % of the city turned up, it would make the numbers for the crowd shown in the video material. In the other video, the crowd is breaking bars over a window in a house. It is said that the house is an army barracks. There is another video where people are standing on the roof of that house and still another one where it is on fire.
Are there people inside?
There is video material of people sitting on a road in rows, all facing one direction. There are loudspeakers on the ground playing a song.
There are more videos of the same road. Now, it is sectioned with waist-high barricades out of bricks, tyres and cinder blocks. People are crouching behind these makeshift walls while bullets and gas cylinders zip above them. In the middle of chaos and violence, my mind focuses on the cinder block. Where did the protestors find them, and could their sturdiness help the protesters stand their ground?
What is the mass needed to create change?
